Chapter Eleven

A missed opportunity…

Gator’s body ached all over. They’d spent the day off-loading equipment for the new building and hauling it through the construction site. Every muscle hurt… even the muscles he’d forgotten he had. As he walked toward the transport ready to take him back to Bear Mountain, he spied the little Firestarter in the backyard, close to the farmhouse.

Even as bad as he hurt, he didn’t want to miss an opportunity to speak to the runt. Jogging over, he watched as Dario moved gracefully, trying to make his fire.

The flames came, but from the set of Dario’s jaw, it wasn’t right. The flames kept sputtering. On the last one, Dario jumped over and stomped on the grass on fire, mumbling curses under his breath.

“You need some help?” Gator asked. He didn’t wait for a reply before using his boot to stomp out a burning spot of grass.

After they got it out, Dario lifted his stare. “Thanks.”

“Don’t mention it,” Gator answered.

Dario held his stare, his lips moving slightly, as if he wanted to say something.

“I was just about to go shower and get some grub. You wanna come have some dinner with me?”

Dario’s eyed widened some, but he remained quiet. Gator felt the charge to the air, the unspoken something between them ramping up.

“I mean, it’s just the buffet at the inn they set up for us soldiers, but the food’s better than any mess hall I’ve ever eaten in,” Gator added.

“I—I can’t,” Dario spat. “Maybe… maybe some other time.”

Gator’s smile fell. “Sure. No problem. Another time then.” He spun, defeated. Had he read the situation wrong?

“Gator?”

He turned, buoyed by the sound of Dario’s voice calling his name.

“Thanks for asking,” Dario murmured. “I’m serious about another time.”

They held one another’s gazes for a moment.

A smile came to Gator’s lips. “Good to hear.”

He turned, the smile growing.
